First Posting - Open Discussion

This will serve as my first posting..... As a Director on the ARMA International Board of Directors, I have a great interest in learning more about what others think about a wide variety of Records and Information Management topics. I'll do some posting regarding some of the issues of the day, as they relate to the profession and as they relate to ARMA International - but be advised that I don't speak FOR ARMA International, I'm one of 16 Board members, and only the ARMA International President can speak for the Association!

As I launch this effort, I have absolutely no idea where it may lead, if anywhere, but I am interested in fairly open discussion, and hope that something that appears here will be of value to others!

(1) As an ARMA member, how do you determine ARMA International’s success with regard to standards development, R.I.M. awareness and education?

Personally, as a RIM professional for more years than I care to admit, I make a determination on ARMA’s success selfishly, purely dependant on whether I am getting anything out of a particular initiative. While the standards, awareness, educational efforts, etc. coming from ARMA may be beneficial to the RIM profession overall, if it doesn’t (or won’t) benefit me directly then I’m just not as interested. It just so happens that I’m challenged by these kinds of things at my current organization, so I am more likely to take a selfish interest in any related initiatives coming from ARMA to help build my own success.

(2) Do you agree that standards, R.I.M. awareness and education should be ARMA International’s top priorities? If not, what should be?

If not right at the top then they should be right up there, as they are still ongoing concerns for ARMA. I’d also like to see attention diverted to other issues just as serious, including developing strategic partnerships both inside and outside of both the profession, and our own individual organizations.

(3) What other issues affecting the R.I.M. profession should be considered (for the radar screen)?

See above.

(4) What do you think are the appropriate levels of communication re: strategies, products and services? If not, how could we better communicate?

Good question, and not sure there’s a “best” answer given not only how busy we are, but the difficulty in communicating with a worldwide audience with so many levels of experience and interests. Personally, I’d like to see more direct communication coming from ARMA in avenues other than the Conference… it seems that I rarely hear from the ARMA president or other Board outside of the annual conference. While the ARMA website is a good resource to learn about (and within) the profession as is developing and sharing strategies, products, services, etc. but a more personal and direct approach would be most beneficial to me.
How about the ARMA president or a Board member calling a randomly-selected ARMA member to “talk shop,” and learn about what’s on that person’s mind. This could be done periodically by not only talking to members in different ARMA regions, but also in different industries. I’m sure the smart folks at ARM can develop this idea further to find ways to truly open up communications in a more direct manner, directly with the people!

(5) What effect does the global business environment have on you and your organization?

Not much—at least not directly at my current organization.
